bundle buggy
DCHP-3 (Mar 2024)
Spelling variants:bundle-buggy, Bundle Buggy
n.
a wheeled cart for taking purchases home from shops (see Image 1).
Type: 5. Frequency — As can be seen in Chart 1, bundle buggy is a Canadianism by virtue of frequency. The term seems to have gained currency in the 1930s. The 1942 quotation is preceded by the 1928 quotation's comic headline, in which reference is made to a bundle buggy in the context of street sales.
In COD-2, s.v. "bundle buggy", the description is "a two-wheeled collapsible cart used for shopping etc."; it is also listed in CGCPD-2006. The term is listed in OED-3 as North American but described as "(in later use, chiefly Canadian)" (OED-3, s.v. "bundle buggy"). However, in ITP Nelson, s.v. "buggy", def. 4, the meaning is "A shopping cart, esp. for groceries".
Bundle buggy is not listed in CCD-2010, Gage-5, W-2, W-3, DARE, nor Merriam-Webster Unabridged.
